FAQ

Can I replace my existing smoke alarm with Phare?

Yes. Phare installs in place of any standard hardwired smoke alarm in about 10 minutes. Just swap the baseplate, connect the cable, and twist Phare into place.

Does Phare work without WiFi?

Yes. Phare detects and alerts locally even without an internet connection. WiFi (or cellular, on the C1 Pro) is used for app notifications, remote monitoring, and device updates, but the core safety functions work independently of WiFi.

Is Phare interconnected and, if so, how?

Yes. If you have more than one Phare in your home, they communicate using the interconnect wire connected during installation. Wireless interconnect capability will be added soon; at that time, all customer devices will automatically upgrade to support wireless interconnect. In both cases, all Phares will sound when one detects an alert, so you'll hear the alarm no matter which room you're in. Phare also sends a notification to your phone with details about what triggered the alarm and where it originated.

Is Phare a heat alarm?

Phare is a smoke alarm, not a heat alarm. If you need a dedicated heat alarm, you can pair Phare with a third-party heat alarm and interconnect them using Phare's interconnect wire so that they all alert together.

Does Phare integrate with any home automation platforms?

Yes. Phare streams sensor data and alerts over MQTT, and our API lets you pull devices, properties, alerts, and sensor data directly from the cloud. If you use Home Assistant or a similar platform, you can integrate Phare using our API and webhooks. Full documentation is available at pharelabs.com/api-docs.

For plug-and-play support with Apple HomeKit, Google Home, and Alexa, we're adding Matter integration soon. Phare already has the hardware for it, so when the update is ready, we'll add Matter capability to existing devices retroactively with an over-the-air update.

What is your return and refund policy?

If you're not happy, return Phare within 30 days for a full refund. We offer free, no-hassle returns from anywhere in the US and UK.

What warranty does Phare come with?

Every Phare comes with a 12-month warranty. If anything goes wrong, we'll replace it. With Phare Protect Pro, that coverage extends for as long as you're a member, up to 10 years.

Why does Phare have a subscription?

Phare gets smarter and safer over time. We believe safety shouldn't stand still, and Phare Protect supports ongoing research that makes Phare even better at protecting your home a year from now than the day you bought it. It also powers the Phare app and API, giving you access to live and historical data from every sensor. Your first year is included with every Phare.

Can I use Phare without Phare Protect?

Your first year of Phare Protect is included with your purchase. After that, it's your choice, though you'll keep getting the most out of Phare (full app access, safety and feature updates, historical data) if you stay. Phare will still function as a certified smoke alarm without it.

Does Phare need batteries?

No. Phare is hardwired and never needs a battery change. It also has a backup battery in case of a power outage, so it keeps working even if your power goes out.

What standards does Phare comply with?

Phare is a fully certified smoke alarm. It meets EN14604 (EU/UK), FCC Part 15 (US), and IEC 62368, among others. For UK customers, Phare meets Grade D1 standards under BS 5839-6 and complies with Scottish fire detection requirements. For a full list of certifications, contact support@pharelabs.com.
